RO Systems and Supplies
RO (Reverse Osmosis), works by using pressure to force a solution through a membrane, retaining the solute on one side and allowing the pure solvent to pass to the other side. This is the reverse of the normal osmosis process, which is the natural movement of solvent from an area of low solute concentration, through a membrane, to an area of high solute concentration when no external pressure is applied.
The process used for removal of all dissolved salts from water is referred to as deionization. Deionization requires the flow of water through two ion exchange materials in order to effect the removal of all salt content. The terms demineralization and deionization are used somewhat interchangeably by the industry. While the term demineralization is generally better understood, deionization is especially apt.
In order for water purification units to function properly recommended water pressure must be maintained. A water pressure gauge from your local hardware store or a constant pressure valve will enable you to insure that you have proper pressure.
