Circulation Pumps and Wavemakers

We here at Paradise Pet Shop always stress the importance of water circulation in the saltwater aquarium. Sadly this is one of the most overlooked aspects of the hobby. It is also very beneficial in most freshwater applications excluding Angel fish and Disus setups.

Powerheads provide important water circulation and oxygenation in the aquarium, far more efficiently then the bubbles from air stones do. The more your tank water is circulated and filtered, the better the water quality is in the aquarium. They help to keep detritus and other tank matter from settling on the bottom of the tank.

Powerhead circulation permits the majority of these particulates to be circulated or suspended, allowing them to be filtered out by a mechanical filter. Most corals have little capacity for removing waste material from their surface. This is especially true of the small polyped stony corals, which owing to their relatively small amount of living tissue, do not waste their energy removing waste material, but rather depend on the water moving around their surface to clean them. It has been determined that the growth rate of many stony corals could be increased dramatically by increasing the flow of water around them.

Water moving over the animals helps to carry oxygen the them, brings food to stationary animals, and stimulates animal activity. Learn about the animals you are choosing for your aquarium. Fish which are placed in an environment where they do not have to fight the current result in the development of fatty deposits, and as a consequence, a shortened lifespan. The water movement and current provided by powerheads are a source of exercise for fish.

Most algal blooms result from excess nutrients being present. In reef tanks, these patches of algae usually are in spots where there is little to no water movement. As a result, detritus settles in these spots. Good water movement keeps the detritus in suspension long enough so that much of it can be removed by the filtration system, or so that it can settle in the sump, where there is little light, and can be removed later. Powerheads can help deter the growth of algae, as some types grow better in calmer, less turbulent water.
